The programme will progressively deepen the essential elements of the spoken and written language over a period of three years.

Who is this course for?

Students of Buddhism of any tradition, but especially useful for followers of the Tibetan tradition.
For people interested in Tibetan culture who wish to be able to communicate with Tibetans in their mother tongue. For lovers of oriental languages.

Course methodology

Each student must have a computer or tablet and an internet connection. Eight 50-minute classes per month to be held on Saturdays and Sundays between 8 and 10 a.m. (the exact timetable of the sessions will be specified shortly). Students must attend at least 40% of the sessions live.

The recording of the sessions will be made available to the students after the sessions. Students will be provided with a manual in Spanish specifically prepared for the course, the material will be handed out as the course progresses. The course will be taught in English.

Online classrooms will be set up with a small number of students as the sessions will be interactive. The sessions will be conducted via Google Meet.

COURSE PROGRAMME

The programme will last three years and will be taught in 6-month modules that can be taken independently:

  • First module: Learning to read Tibetan.
  • Second module: Conversing in Tibetan.
  • Third module: Learning to write Tibetan.

Below you will find an extensive explanation of the first module of the programme:

  1. In the first month we will learn the Tibetan consonants and vowels.
  2. In the second month we will learn the letters.
  3. In the third month we will learn 10 Tibetan prefixes, 5 suffixes and 2 second suffixes.
  4. In the fourth month we will learn 100 commonly used verbs and 100 commonly used nouns.
  5. In the fifth month we will learn 100 adjectives and 100 adverbs.
  6. In the sixth month we will learn 100 basic Buddhist words.

Students will progressively learn the Tibetan alphabet and its pronunciation, how to read, basic vocabulary for colloquial conversation as well as the most frequently used words in Buddhist texts.

The module ‘Learning to read Tibetan’ will start in October. Places on the course are limited, so please do not delay in registering.
